Welcome to Day 4 of my series, where I delve into my daily thoughts and observations on business, design, and personal growth. Today, I've been closely studying Elon Musk's ambitious plan to turn Twitter into X, and it's led me to believe that he might be missing a golden opportunity. What if instead of rebranding Twitter, he transformed its platform into an operating system, much like what Zuck has done with Meta?
Imagine if X became Twitter's financial arm, a powerful platform akin to PayPal or Cash App, but with even greater capabilities for crypto. Converting every Twitter account into a crypto wallet could potentially create the largest single financial institution in the world, undoubtedly the most significant Web3 financial entity. With this foundation in place, TwitterOS could support a range of other owned assets.
By resurrecting Vine as the streaming media arm, Elon could challenge TikTok and YouTube on his platform. Twitter could compete with the likes of Medium and Substack. Further, transforming Spaces into a streaming music and/or podcasting platform would add even more dimensions to the ecosystem.
The beauty of this approach lies in consolidating multiple applications within one platform. Not to mention, the integration could extend to other ventures he already owns, such as Tesla and Starlink. With this, Elon would possess a tech infrastructure that could arguably become the most culturally influential tech stack worldwide. It's clear that while Elon Musk possesses incredible talents across various domains, branding might not be one of his strengths. To truly unlock the potential of his vision for Twitter, he could consider entrusting the branding role to someone else who excels in that space. By doing so, he can focus on his strengths and ensure a more successful execution of his ambitious plans. However, if he ever perfects his branding strategy, we are watching a multi-trillion dollar company grow at light-speed in real time.
In business, recognizing untapped opportunities and maximizing the potential of existing resources is key. As entrepreneurs, we should continuously explore innovative ways to expand our ventures and build platforms that empower a diverse range of functionalities. Remember, stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. Because as always, the play doesn’t care who makes it.
